In the gallery’s exploration of artist Barbara Marks’ recent oeuvre, we presented “Barbara Marks: The Paintings” from March 16th – April 8th: the artist’s first solo exhibition at a Brooklyn gallery,

One of the most gifted colorists working today, Marks captures the contours and moods of her everyday surroundings using an unapologetically vivid palette. The exhibition, “Barbara Marks: The Paintings,” exemplified the artist’s aptitude for creating space with color in her abstracted still lifes, interiors and landscapes.

Now, we look forward to the companion exhibition, “Barbara Marks: The Drawings” opening Friday, April 13th, from 6-8:30pm. 

Join us for the Brooklyn- gallery debut of a curated selection from Marks’ collection of expressive ink-on-paper drawings. The artist transforms a simple black line into an elegant journey through time, space and daily encounters using a visual language that is, at once, restrained and captivating.

For me, drawing isn’t a product. It is an activity. I draw every day, any place, and everywhere. Ordinarily my imagery is rooted in observation, but some of my latest drawings have moved into the realm of fantasy.

BIO:

Barbara Marks is a multidisciplinary artist based in Connecticut. She is known for her smallish, square, colorful, paintings that are semi-abstract in nature—suggesting interior spaces, landscapes, and objects. Her work calls attention to the commonplace and the local. A child of the sixties, Marks grew up in Westport, Connecticut. She attended college, studying anthropology, until she fell into graphic design. In 1978, she established her own studio specializing in book design. In 2001, she left that behind to study painting at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, earning a BFA (2005) followed by an MFA from Brooklyn College CUNY (2008). Since then, Marks has been awarded artist residencies in Italy, France, and across the United States and she has shown her work throughout the Northeast.
