Ground Floor Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Rhia Hurt, featuring paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installations. Inspired by her lived experiences—both the urban and natural landscape,
“Hurt depicts forms suggestive of stones, reflecting pools, rope, netting, and chain link fences. Exploring narratives through time and space, Hurt considers the journey as well as a reflection of the final work in her practice.
With a meditative process that encompasses experimentation and intuition, Hurt collaborates with the materials. It is a balancing act. Central to her practice is the ovoid form. Using this shape as a constant, Hurt experiments and refines her gestures by engaging with the formal qualities of paint and surfaces. The watercolor and high flow acrylic paints dry and recede at various rates on papers, fabrics, and directly on the wall. Hurt embraces the flows and shifts in color and luminosity as well as the surface tension that occurs between paint and plane.
Hurt meticulously constructs positive and negative spaces. In the large-scale works on Yupo paper, four ovoids in blue, green, and grayish-purple are sometimes interconnected while others are located slightly apart. Liquid appears to be flowing and swirling through the forms, allowing gravity to take its course. In earthy tones, the imagery represents mystical and topological landscapes. For Hurt, it has come full circle—water and pigment form these landscapes from which the pigments are originally sourced. Hurt’s methodical yet organic process requires attention to detail as evident with every drip and each small speckled pool of gold paint.
Hurt seeks to capture visual experiences in the moment, as well as beauty and mystery. In these translucent—often weightless seeming—forms is a yearning to see through and beyond. Hurt balances serenity and tension.”
