THE CONSTRUCTIONS
A Complete Fabrication
Curated by John Gagné
“The more one looks at this strange and beguiling object, the more it seems to point to experiment, or perhaps better to a kind of purposeful tinkering informed among other things by newly discovered collage practices and by the possibilities of image construction…”
– Dawn Ades, Essay on Joseph Cornell
Hmmm, what is that? Looks like six glass marbles in six small goblets, with an old map of the solar system, with copper wire and a wood block, with painted egg shells behind a small light bulb. It looks like a pyramid and a cube connected by string, suspending small photographs of rabbits and ships. It looks like a penny arcade, an articulated wire bird, a copper plate gone green in wisdom, a sinking ship disappearing into a semaphore pattern of color. It’s a machine for dreaming, a toy in the attic, a marvel in the museum and a complete fabrication.
